About this badge

In the television and film industries, the producer’s role is a combination of entrepreneurship, managerial skills, and creativity. In this certificate program, students learn a producer’s responsibilities and gain an understanding of the underlying business management principles. This certificate, which can be completed partially or entirely online, comprises three levels of classes that cover the creative, executive, and administrative responsibilities of an independent producer, and it teaches the skill set needed to become an effective member of a producer’s unit.

Upon completion of the program, students know how to:

  • Fulfill the roles and responsibilities of producers—executive, visual effects, pre- and postproduction, management, and coordination
  • Work with script selection and the vetting process
  • Develop budgets, identify typical expenditure areas, and track expenses during productions
  • Put together an investment prospectus and identify likely investors
  • Audition actors and assemble a cast
  • Build a crew of writing, film, graphics, music, and technical professionals
  • Create a pitch for networks, cable channels, or studios
  • Read, understand, and utilize basic contracts and legal business agreements between the different components of a production company, the crew, and the investors
