A Gilman Scholar is an outstanding individual selected to receive the nationally competitive U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study or intern abroad. Through completion of their study abroad program or international internship and intercultural experiences abroad, Gilman Scholars enhance their academic interests and gain valuable skills increasing their global competency and professional capabilities. Gilman Scholars demonstrate key skills, such as: adaptability and flexibility, functioning outside of one’s comfort zone, operating with a high level of ambiguity, managing time and resources, identifying and solving problems with limited tools, cross-cultural sensitivity and empathy, linguistic capabilities, and appreciation for diversity and varying perspectives. Furthermore, Gilman Scholars incorporate project planning, communication, and community service through self-designed and implemented Follow-on Service Projects, encouraging more American students to participate in international education and exchanges. Gilman Scholars serve as role models to their peers and community as a person of excellence and achievement and example of possibility.
