This badge represents the successful completion of the SLS Buzz Course, “Universal Design for Sustainable Communities: Engaging Seniors in Farmers’ Markets.” This project-based short course was offered by the Georgia Tech Serve-Learn-Sustain program with the GT Center for Assistive Technology, the Schools of Industrial Design and Economics, Campus Sustainability, and the Georgia Farmers Market Association. It introduced students and community partners to the Principles of Universal Design, using seniors’ access to farmers’ markets as a case study of design for sustainable and inclusive communities. The course included:
• Introduction to sustainable and inclusive communities, with a special focus on social and environmental determinants of health
• Collaborative, community-centered, and evidence-based design processes
• Principles of Universal Design and differences between accessible and universal design solutions
• Hands-on field work and design experiences
• Design prototyping and public presentation
