About this badge

A collaborative program between UC San Diego and Biosphere2.

UCSD continues its partnership with Biosphere 2 (modeled on Earth, the original Biosphere) which is located in Oracle Arizona, 30 miles outside of Tucson. This 40 acre campus was originally built for research and development of self-sustaining space-colonization technology. Two missions were undertaken between 1991 and 1994, which sealed Biospherians inside the glass enclosure to measure survivability. Much of what was learned during those missions resulted in a better understanding of our ecological systems. University of Arizona scientists are continuing large-scale research in the Biosphere enclosure, performing key experiments aimed at quantifying some of the consequences of global climate change on Earth’s systems. Students work on projects under the guidance of these faculty researchers.
